Graphic Overlay Printing Services

A graphic overlay is a thin layer of plastic or polymer material with printed designs or characters, made to rest in front of or on top of a surface. Overlays often operate as the direct interface between a customer and a product, providing instructions, labeling, branding, texture, color, and designs. They offer high versatility and see use in a wide variety of applications and products, including control panels, consumer goods, appliances, and membrane switches, among many others.

At Specialty Printing and Processing, we are pleased to offer an extensive selection of graphic overlay production materials and techniques. Our fabrication capabilities include die cutting, laser cutting, and a variety of adhesives, so we can cut and shape overlays to meet any desired specification. In addition, we provide both screen printing and digital printing services with superior printing detail to match your exact project requirements.

In addition to the above products, Specialty Printing offers custom and specialty graphic overlay services for a broad range of applications. Whatever your specific graphic overlay requirements, our experts can make your concept a reality.

Materials for Graphic Overlays

Attention to the type of material used in a graphic overlay proves just as critical as the design. Different materials serve better for different settings and conditions, and an overlay plastic for indoor use may be less than ideal when exposed to the elements. At Specialty Printing, we offer a selection of durable and reliable overlay materials, to ensure your product will function optimally in its environment.

  • Polyester Overlays – Ideal material for harsh industrial and mechanical environments, polyester offers high scratch resistance and the ability withstand exposure to chemicals, acids, and solvents.
  • Vinyl Overlays – This highly economical overlay material provides an array of advantages. Easy to die cut, vinyl graphic overlays can be manufactured with a variety of finishes. For this reason, it is well-suited to both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Polycarbonate (Lexan) Overlays – Valued for its strength and clarity, polycarbonate provides a cost-effective material to fabricate into desired shapes. The material often provides graphic overlays appropriate for windows and other clear applications. Extremely durable in harsh weather conditions, this material proves most ideal for outdoor use.

Graphic Overlay Features

At Specialty Printing, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide highly customized overlays for projects and applications that have special requirements. Our specialty services include but are not limited to:

  • Printing for harsh or hazardous environments. With our extensive range of materials and coatings for extreme environments, our knowledgeable team can work to find the perfect combination suitable for your application.
  • Custom shapes and cutting. We have an extensive range of custom cutting and shaping capabilities, including laser cutting, digital cutting, die cutting, sheering, and plotting. With our state-of-the-art equipment, Specialty Printing can create any shape or contour needed.
  • Selective adhesives. In some cases, overlays may include elements that do not call for an adhesive, such as a clear window or cutout fit for an LED.
  • Selective texture. Graphic overlays can be manufactured with different textures, full texturing, and hard coats. Textured sections can be added selectively to avoid windows, LED cutouts, and for contrast and graphic effect.
  • Branding and informational overlays. Our quality graphic design and printing services allow us to print branding elements, informational text, or instructions directly onto the overlay per your specifications.

Finishing Operations

Laminating
Materials can be overlaminated with various films such as polyester, polycarbonate, or vinyl to provide protection, appearance or effect. Pressure sensitive adhesives can be laminated to films or sheets to facilitate mounting functionality for the finished part. We can put together multiple layers of different materials to create insulators, shielding components or custom constructions for special applications. Copper and aluminum foils are examples of products we utilize for those special needs.
Slitting
Slitting is done to create a back or front slit in a protective liner to provide the crack and peel effect for pressure sensitive products. Slitting is also used as a lower cost alternative to pull tabs on pressure sensitive adhesive-backed products. Power shearing and back slitting, for example, are alternatives to tooling and diecutting. Back slits on parts are also advantageous for strategic part placement where only part of the liner is removed and the part can be handled or positioned easily.
Die-Cutting
Diecutting by means of using Steel Rule Dies is an industry standard for cutting shaped parts or parts with interior cutouts, tabs, or large volume. All of our roll labels are produced using tooling, but in many cases, common die shapes or sizes can use common tools. In our sheet-fed products we utilize Clamshell type diecutters. For smaller quantities or larger products, our Gerber M3000 can be utilized to kisscut or diecut products as a digital solution instead of a steel rule die purchase.
Powercutting/Shearing
Powercutting is the use of a guillotine power shear with a digital readout controller to semi precision cut films, thin gauge sheets and layered constructions into square or rectangular shapes. Our largest production cutter is 54″ wide, but we do special cutting up to 12′ for products such as banners and sign inserts. Shearing is our cutting process for rectangular sheet products in gauge metals.
